Research Description

Prof. Morosan is a condensed matter experimentalist, whose work straddles the physics, materials science and chemistry borders. Her research is focused on the design and synthesis of new compounds with unconventional electronic and magnetic ground states.  Of particular interested are unconventional superconductors, or materials with zero electrical resistance at low temperatures, where magnetism plays an important role. The conventional wisdom that magnetism and superconductivity are immiscible has been losing ground for more then 25 years, in favor of the concept of magnetism-mediated superconductivity. Not only are magnetic interactions required for electron pairing in the famous Cu-O high temperature superconductors and their younger “cousins” Fe pnictides, but they seem to be the key ingredient for high temperature superconductivity. One goal of the research in the Morosan lab is to understand the interplay between crystal structure, magnetism and superconductivity in facilitating the design and discovery of practical, high temperature superconductors. This is done in tandem with efforts to understand exotic magnetic ground states, such as itinerant magnets without magnetic constituent elements.

In her lab, Prof. Morosan employs different materials synthesis techniques - crystal growth from molten fluxes or using vapor transport, solid-state reaction for polycrystalline sample synthesis - together with fundamental structural and physical properties measurements, such as xray diffraction, magnetization, electrical transport and specific heat measurements. Basic band structure calculations performed in the group complement the experimental characterization.


Emilia Morosan is an Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Materials Science and Nanoengineering at Rice University. After receiving a BS in Physics in Romania in 1999, she moved to US for graduate work. Prof. Morosan got her PhD in Physics in 2005 from Iowa State University, and subsequently moved to Princeton University as a postdoctoral research assistant in Chemistry. Since joining Rice in 2007, she received several early career awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers (PECASE) and the NSF CAREER. Prof. Morosan was recently selected as a Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation fellow in Materials Synthesis.
