Description

Thermal Hall effect of neutral spin excitations in quantum magnets

N. P. Ong, Princeton University

For charge-carrying currents the Hall effect arises from the deflection of the charge carriers by the Lorentz force. For a charge-neutral current, it is somewhat oxymoronic to talk about a Lorentz force or a Hall response. However, recent theory has shown that, in quantum magnets, the spin current in chiral magnets can exhibit a Hall effect in the thermal conductivity. This arises from topological effects, including the Berry curvature. I will provide an introduction to these topics and survey experiments demonstrating the thermal Hall effect in pyrochlores and Kagome magnets.
