Abstract:

Materials we are familiar with display amazingly beautiful phenomena. Despite the apparent complexity, however we also know that the underlying basic principles of three-dimensional materials, except for some rare cases, are in fact well accounted for by a couple of simple concepts like quasiparticles and scaling. But it works only up to a point. For example, these comfortable ideas begin to breakdown when one reduces the dimension of materials. In this talk, I will discuss how we have discovered the breakdown of magnon, which is otherwise a stable quasiparticles of magnetic systems [1,2]. And I will also sketch some of potentials offered by a new class of two-dimensional magnetic van der Waals materials [3-5]. [1] Joosung Oh, et al., Phys. Rev.
