Title: New opportunities of materials science from multiple anion compounds
Abstract: Recently, mixed anion compounds consisting of multiple anions within a single compound have gathered attention. The use of multiple anions enables unusual coordination modes and crystal structures, giving them a huge potential for new properties when compared to existing oxides or nitrides. While mixed anion compounds will occupy a central stage in materials development, the field is still quite new. In my talk, I would like to show several recent studies on mixed anion compounds, in particular by focusing on the role of hydride anion in oxides. For example, the lability of hydride anion allows anion-exchange topochemical reactions to yield various mixed anion compounds when oxyhydrides are used as precursors. The absence of p orbital in the valence shell is another unique feature of hydride anion. Related to this, a layered oxyhydride SrVO2H (V3+) exhibits a pressure-driven insulator-to-metal transition, where H- anion acts as a pi blocker. If time allows, our recent study on visible-light responsive photocatalysts such as Bi4NbO8Cl will be presented.
