Title: Quantum Phase Transitions: Thermodynamic Constraints, and Exponent Relations
Abstract:
I will discuss the notion of first-order versus second-order transitions in the context of quantum phase transitions; in particular, the question of what replaces the concept of a latent heat at a transition that occurs at zero temperature. For second-oder transitions, I will introduce critical exponents that are germane to quantum phase transitions, and discuss the question of how many of the critical exponents are independent. Finally, I will discuss issues related to the accuracy measured critical exponents, for both classical and quantum phase transitions.
