Title: Transport and heating in nanoscale junctions: the Landauer picture and its limits

Abstract: I will introduce the Landauer formalism, a way of thinking about electronic transport in very small systems first introduced in 1959 (!) that has proven extremely useful over the last two decades.  The Landauer approach does make certain idealized assumptions, however.  In the context of atomic- and molecular-scale junctions that our group has studied, I will discuss deviations from the simple Landauer expectations, as inferred from a combination of noise measurements (looking at fluctuations in the current rather than just the average current as a function of voltage) and (time permitting) optical scattering methods (looking at Raman scattering from the junction region, detectable thanks to surface plasmon effects).
